Program
This year, the Human Rights International Film Festival focuses on four themes: the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, unjust punishment, elections and democracy, and, as always, women's issues. In addition, it features a retrospective of the leading South Korean filmmaker, Park Kwang-Su. Here is a description of these Festival highlights, followed by the full 1996 Film List.

A SINGLE SPARK
TO THE STARRY ISLANDThis year's Festival will host the first New York retrospective of the works of internationally acclaimed South Korean director Park Kwang-Su, whose most recent work, A Single Spark won kudos in this year's Berlin International Film Festival. Acknowledged as the leader of the New Cinema in South Korea, Park has consistently explored the points of tension in his homeland's history and society. Justly famous for the thorough and meticulous preparation he puts into each project, Park is respected as the kind of demanding director who achieves such stunning results that actors clamour to work with him. Park Kwang-Su will be in attendance and will hold discussions following the screenings of his films.

YOU, ME, JERUSALEMThe Festival features a touring program of films and videos from Israeli and Palestinian filmmakers that have been made since the historic 1993 signing of the Palestinian-Israeli Peace Accord. These personal works portray the complex and contradictory emotions, circumstances, and beliefs affecting all parties as the struggle to find peace unfolds.

PRIMARYAs this is a Presidential election year in the U.S., the Festival is featuring a series on elections and democracy. including Alan Pakula's masterpiece The Parallax View starring Warren Beatty. Mr. Pakula will attend and answer questions following the screening. A voter-regestration booth will be posted at the door to the theater throughout the run of the Festival to encourage audiences to vote.

A HOT ROOF
OUR BURMESE DAYSEach year the Festival devotes an entire day and evening to films made by and about women addressing women's rights around the world. Headlining this year's "Women's Day" are Devil's Children and Calling the Ghosts, which deal with rape as a war crime in Rwanda and Bosnia-Herzegovina respectively.
