In the Name of the Emperor
Christine Choy and Nancy Tong | USA | 1995 | 60 min. | documentary

In 1937, 300,000 people were killed and 20,000 women were raped and then killed when Japanese troops invaded Nanjing (aka Nanking), then the capital of China. Horrifyingly graphic footage, shot by an American missionary during the massacre at Nanjing, is combined with diaries and interviews from survivors as well as soldiers, the latter of whom openly speak about carrying out the killings, tortures and rapes. In the Name of the Emperor raises the basic philosophical, psychological and ethical questions surrounding the horrors of war.
