Gray, torpedo-shaped baleen whale with narrow head, dorsal hump and 2 blowholes. Its baleen (made of keratin -- the protein in hair and fingernails) is used in place of teeth for straining food. The skin has white markings from parasites and other causes. Females average 46 feet and almost 70,000 lbs.; males are slightly smaller.
