The Torah says Abraham had three wives: Sarah, who was his main wife and partner, plus two concubines, Hagar and Keturah. He had eight children between them.
With Sarah, Abraham had a son named Isaac. This is the Jewish line of descent. With Hagar, he had a son named Ishmael. This, according to Islam, is the Muslim line of descent. (The Torah says only that Ishmael's sons were princes for the twelve nations that bear the sons' names. The locations of these nations are hard to pin down, but appear to center on Arabia and extend to other areas of the mideast.) Biblical commentators also associate Keturah's six sons with mideastern nations.
This is how God's promise to make Abraham the father of "a horde of nations" is fulfilled.
