Amalek

A grandchild of Esau; also the tribe descended from him. The tribe was Israel's arch-enemy and was cursed by God for attacking the Israelites when they left Egypt.

Amidah

Literally, standing. The Amidah is a prayer at the heart of every Jewish service, consisting of praise, thanksgiving, and on weekdays, petitions. Its name reflects the fact that is recited while standing. Also known as the Eighteen Benedictions (though it actually includes nineteen), the Shemoneh Esray and the Silent Prayer (because it is chanted in an undertone).

Pronunciation

Ammonites

An ancient nation, descended from Lot, who lived to the northeast of the Dead Sea.

Amorites

A people who originally lived on the west of the Dead Sea, but were driven out.

Ararat Mountains

The place where Noah's ark came to rest when the flood waters receded. Opinion varies as to where it is located.

Asher

Jacob's second son; also the tribe of Israel descended from him.
